19th March 2025

By Claire Miller
Nestled in the heart of Ibiza’s picturesque countryside, the village of San José (Sant Josep de sa Talaia) comes alive every March with the celebration of its patron saint and the arrival of spring. The San José Festival, or "Festes de Sant Josep," is a cornerstone of local culture, blending religious devotion with lively festivities that attract both residents and visitors.
The festival’s origins are rooted in centuries-old Catholic traditions, honouring Saint Joseph, the patron saint of workers and families. While the festival maintains its religious significance, it has evolved into a dynamic community event that also celebrates the renewal and beauty of spring.
On March 19th, the feast day of Saint Joseph, the village hosts a solemn mass in the parish church, followed by a procession through the streets. The church bells ring out in celebration, and the air is filled with the scent of fresh flowers carried by the faithful. Flowers and florals are a central theme throughout the festival, symbolising the arrival of spring and adding a vibrant touch to the festivities.
Music, Dance, and Merriment
No Ibizan festival is complete without music, and the San José Festival is no exception. Traditional folk bands, known as "colles de ball pagès," perform lively dances in their distinctive costumes, offering a glimpse into the island’s culture. Contemporary musicians also take to the stage, ensuring a diverse lineup that appeals to all ages.
A highlight of the festival is the "Flower Power" party, a colourful event that nods to both the season of renewal and Ibiza’s iconic hippie past. Attendees don floral attire, and the atmosphere is filled with peace, love, and joyous celebration, making it a must-experience part of the festivities.
Throughout the festival, the streets of San José are transformed into a lively marketplace. Artisans display handcrafted goods, food stalls offer local products and food such as “ensaimadas" and children delight in carnival games and rides. Adding to the excitement are the traditional "Correfoc" performances, where fire-wielding "dimonis" (demons) dance through the streets in a thrilling spectacle of light and sound.
